Some wounds from service never fully heal, whether they show up on an X-ray or only in the nights you can’t sleep. When the VA answers your claim with a denial or a rating that barely registers what you deal with, it’s easy to feel dismissed. But that decision can be challenged, and you won’t be facing the VA alone.

Hill & Ponton has represented veterans and surviving families since 1986, and our VA-accredited attorneys practice disability law exclusively. Our win rate is 96% on the cases we accept, and you owe us nothing in attorney fees if the appeal isn’t successful.

Your condition might trace back to active duty, a National Guard or Reserve assignment, or an exposure that only showed up years after you left the service. Wherever it started, if a VA decision went against you, we’re ready to help you appeal it.

  • Disability Compensation: We look at every condition the VA has, or hasn’t, service-connected and work to get each one rated correctly, including back pay dating to the correct effective date.
  • VA Disability Appeals: We take on denied and underrated claims and manage the whole appeal, so you’re not left decoding VA letters on your own.
  • Rating Increases: If your symptoms have grown worse, we present updated medical evidence and seek the higher rating your condition supports now.
  • Special Monthly Compensation: Loss of use of a hand or foot, blindness, or being housebound can qualify you for Special Monthly Compensation at rates above the standard schedule, and we make sure the VA considers it.
  • Individual Unemployability: If your disabilities from service make steady work impossible, we pursue TDIU, which pays at the same rate as a 100% rating.
  • DIC and Survivor Benefits: Spouses, children, and parents of veterans who died from service-connected conditions can pursue Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and related survivor benefits with our help.

What Compensation and Benefits Are Available to You?

A disability rating is based on VA’s evaluation of how much a service-connected condition limits you, and it determines your monthly compensation. Ratings go up in steps of 10%, from 0% to 100%.

Two or more conditions don’t simply add up. The VA’s combined-ratings formula turns a 60% and a 20% into 68%, rounded to 70%. Use our VA disability calculator to see where your own ratings land.

Here’s the current monthly pay scale for a veteran who has no dependents and isn’t married:

  • 10%: $180.42
  • 20%: $356.66
  • 30%: $552.47
  • 40%: $795.84
  • 50%: $1,132.90
  • 60%: $1,435.02
  • 70%: $1,808.45
  • 80%: $2,102.15
  • 90%: $2,362.30
  • 100%: $3,938.58

Supporting a spouse, children, or dependent parents increases what you receive, and payment amounts rise with the VA’s yearly cost-of-living adjustment. Iowa adds its own state benefits for disabled veterans, including a military service property tax exemption, the Injured Veterans Grant, disabled veteran license plates, and more.

Toxic Exposure Claims

Cedar Rapids sits within a few hours’ drive of several contaminated military sites, including two across the Mississippi River in Illinois. The PACT Act expanded VA benefits for toxic exposure, and the VA counts exposure during training or active-duty service toward eligibility as well.

  • Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (Middletown): EPA’s site profile lists RDX explosives, metals, volatile organic compounds, and depleted uranium among the primary contaminants, with depleted uranium in soil around the firing sites. ATSDR links high RDX exposure to nervous system effects, including seizures.
  • Rock Island Arsenal (Rock Island, Illinois, about 82 miles away): DoD finished its first round of PFAS testing here, and its status chart lists a remedial investigation as planned, the next step when PFAS results exceed EPA screening levels. High exposure to PFOA and PFOS is associated with a higher risk of kidney or testicular cancer.
  • Savanna Army Depot (Savanna, Illinois, about 115 miles away): Placed on EPA’s National Priorities List in 1989, the depot handled, processed, and stored munitions, explosives, and industrial chemicals, and burned obsolete ordnance. EPA’s contaminant list includes TNT, RDX, trichloroethylene, lead, and arsenic, with TNT in soil and groundwater at the former washout lagoons. ATSDR reports strong evidence that trichloroethylene can cause kidney cancer.

Toxic exposure that causes illnesses years or decades later (like cancer) is often difficult to prove. But just because the VA denied you before doesn’t mean you have to give up. Our experienced lawyers can appeal the claim on your behalf and fight for the benefits you deserve.

What Evidence Can Win a VA Disability Claim?

The VA grants service connection when your file convincingly shows three things:

  1. A diagnosed condition: Current medical records that name the condition you’re claiming, physical or mental.
  2. An in-service event: Service records, treatment notes, or buddy statements showing the injury, illness, incident, or exposure you experienced in uniform.
  3. A nexus opinion: A medical professional’s explanation of why the condition you’re claiming is at least as likely as not tied to that event.

When one of these is thin, we build it up, from locating records at the Iowa City VA Medical Center or the Cedar Rapids VA Clinic to arranging an independent medical opinion.

When Should You Hire a VA Disability Lawyer?

A lawyer is most useful right after the VA says no or rates you too low, while every review option is still open. At that stage, the decision letter spells out why the VA ruled against you, and your next filing has to answer that reason directly. Our attorneys can:

  • Explain in plain terms what your decision letter actually says
  • Spot errors in how the VA applied the rating criteria to your condition
  • Prepare you for any VA exam the appeal triggers
  • Build a written argument tying the evidence to the rating you deserve
  • Keep track of every deadline so nothing lapses

Deadlines are part of the strategy. You have one year from the date on your decision letter to request a Higher-Level Review or a Board appeal, and the route you pick also decides whether new evidence can go into the record. We weigh both before anything is filed.

Housing Support for Homeless and At-Risk Veterans in Cedar Rapids

If you’re homeless or close to it, a VA Iowa City homeless services care coordinator can help you secure transitional or permanent housing, financial assistance to prevent homelessness, job training, and treatment for addiction or depression. Here in Cedar Rapids, the Community Resource and Referral Center at the Linn County VA Clinic focuses on veterans without housing, those at risk of losing it, and those living with serious mental illness.

The Iowa Balance of State’s 2025 Point-in-Time count, which covers 96 of Iowa’s 99 counties, Linn County among them, recorded 68 homeless veterans, but many more could be one crisis away from losing their housing. A VA denial or low rating can cut off income you need to stay housed. This is why Hill & Ponton gives priority to homeless or at-risk veterans, and no attorney fee is due unless we win your appeal.
