Disability Ratings and Compensation
The rating the VA assigns your service-connected condition is what sets the size of your monthly, tax-free payment.
Those ratings run from 10% to 100%, and the more disabling your condition, the higher the rating and the larger the payment.

- 20%: $356.66
- 30%: $552.47
- 40%: $795.84
- 50%: $1,132.90
- 60%: $1,435.02

- 80%: $2,102.15
- 90%: $2,362.30
- 100%: $3,938.58
Adding dependents such as a spouse, children, or parents increases the amount, and the VA raises the rates each year to keep pace with inflation.

Proving Toxic Exposure Claims
Many veterans in Coeur d’Alene and across the Idaho panhandle served at installations in the Inland Northwest where toxic exposure is now documented and recognized by the VA.
- Fairchild Air Force Base – About 35 miles west of Coeur d’Alene near Spokane, Washington, Fairchild has documented PFAS contamination from decades of AFFF firefighting foam use (from the 1970s until 2016). The chemicals migrated into off-base drinking water wells in nearby Airway Heights, and the base remains under an active cleanup.
- Farragut Naval Training Station – On the shores of Lake Pend Oreille at Bayview, about 40 miles northeast of Coeur d’Alene, Farragut was a major U.S. Navy training base during World War II, training hundreds of thousands of sailors before the land became Farragut State Park. Navy veterans of that era and after often encountered asbestos and other hazardous materials common aboard ships and in older military facilities, now recognized by the VA as the basis for many disability claims.

- A Current Medical Diagnosis – A licensed provider, whether a VA physician or a private doctor, must put your condition in writing, confirming that you live with it today.
- Evidence of an In-Service Event, Illness, or Exposure – Your file needs proof that something during your service, such as an injury, a deployment-related illness, or contact with toxic substances, could have caused or worsened the condition.
- A Medical Nexus Linking the Two – A physician has to connect the two in writing, concluding that your condition is “at least as likely as not” rooted in your service. This nexus is the toughest piece to establish and the reason many claims are turned down.

Veterans Housing Assistance and Support
On the night of January 28, 2026, 12 of the 180 people counted as homeless across North Idaho’s Region 1 (Kootenai, Bonner, Boundary, Shoshone, and Benewah counties) were veterans, according to the Idaho Housing and Finance Association’s 2026 Point-in-Time count.
The Idaho Housing and Finance Association runs the HUD-VASH voucher program across the state, with its Coeur d’Alene branch covering Kootenai and the neighboring northern counties. Working alongside the Spokane VA, it moves eligible homeless veterans into secure, long-term homes.
