Have you been denied or underrated by the VA? You’re not alone. As VA disability lawyers specialized in appeals, we have successfully represented thousands of disabled veterans in Georgia and nationwide, ensuring they receive the VA benefits they are rightfully entitled to.
Over 700,000 veterans call Georgia home and approximately 30% of them receive disability compensation. But for many, the path to benefits begins with a VA denial. That’s where an experienced attorney can make all the difference.
At Hill & Ponton, disability law is all we do. We’re fully dedicated to serving disabled veterans and their families, with no upfront attorney fees – you only pay if we win your case and recover benefits on your behalf.
Our Legal Services for Georgia Veterans
- Disability Compensation: We help prove that your physical or mental health conditions were caused or worsened by military service, for which you’ll receive monthly payments based on your disability rating.
- Appeals: If your VA claim has been denied (or you mistakenly received a low rating), we’ll determine the best path forward and guide you through the process, whether it’s a Supplemental Claim, a Higher-Level Review, or an appeal at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.
- Increases: If your condition worsened over time or the VA underrated it initially, we’ll work to secure a higher rating to ensure your monthly benefits reflect the true severity of your disability.
- Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU): If your service-connected conditions prevent you from holding steady employment, you may qualify for TDIU. This benefit pays at the 100% rate, even if your combined VA rating is below 100%.
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC): We assist Georgia veterans with severe disabilities in obtaining SMC, a benefit designed to cover the extra costs tied to your care needs.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a Georgia veteran who died from a service-connected condition, we can help you pursue DIC and other survivor benefits.
Disability Ratings and Compensation
The VA assigns disability ratings in increments of 10%, based on how seriously your service-connected condition affects your ability to function. This rating determines the amount of monthly, tax-free compensation you may receive.
If you have more than one service-connected condition, the VA doesn’t simply add the percentages. Instead, it applies a combined rating formula, which often results in a total lower than the raw sum of each condition.
Here’s the current monthly compensation for a Georgia veteran with no dependents:
- 10%: $175.51
- 20%: $346.95
- 30%: $537.42
- 40%: $774.16
- 50%: $1,102.04
- 60%: $1,395.93
- 70%: $1,759.19
- 80%: $2,044.89
- 90%: $2,297.96
- 100%: $3,831.30
Georgia State Benefits
In addition to federal benefits, the state of Georgia offers disabled veterans its own specific benefits, including financial and housing assistance, veteran hiring preference, transportation benefits, and more.

When Should You Hire a VA Disability Lawyer?
Many Georgia veterans start their VA claims process with the support of Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs). These groups are an excellent resource for filing your initial claim. But when the VA denies or underrates you, an experienced lawyer can greatly increase your chances of winning the appeal.

This achievement comes from our unique focus on VA law, careful case preparation, and unwavering dedication to the veterans we serve, in Georgia and everywhere in the U.S. If you’re ready to appeal your VA decision, we can make sure you get all the benefits you qualify for.

VA Disability for Toxic Exposure
Georgia is home to several military bases where service members may have been exposed to toxic substances, including PFAS (commonly used in firefighting foam), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, and other hazardous waste.
- Robins Air Force Base (Warner Robins, GA) – Listed on the EPA’s National Priorities List (Superfund) due to hazardous waste disposal sites. Investigations have found contamination of soil and groundwater with VOCs (like PCE, TCE), heavy metals (such as chromium, lead, arsenic), and industrial waste. Remedial actions are ongoing, and the site remains under environmental cleanup supervision.
- Dobbins Air Reserve Base (Marietta, GA) – The Department of Defense has confirmed PFAS contamination of soil and groundwater at Dobbins ARB, linked to the historical use of firefighting foam.
- Fort Gordon (Augusta, GA) – One of the US-based storage sites for Agent Orange, this base is also known for PFAS contamination.
- Moody Air Force Base (Valdosta, GA) – Recognized as another PFAS-contaminated site in Georgia, stemming from long-term use of aqueous firefighting foam.
- Fort Stewart (Hinesville, GA) – A major Army installation with decades of industrial, fuel, and waste handling operations. Environmental assessments have confirmed PFAS contamination in soil and groundwater.
- Savannah Air National Guard Base and Hunter Army Airfield (Savannah, GA) – Historic use of firefighting foam, along with aircraft maintenance and fuel storage, has resulted in environmental concerns over PFAS and TCE contamination.
- Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning, Columbus, GA) – Training and maneuver site heavily contaminated with PFAS.
- Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany (Albany, GA) – Designated a Superfund site in 1989 due to widespread contamination from depot-level operations and hazardous waste disposal. Veterans may have been exposed to VOCs, PCBs, arsenic, lead, chromium, and PAHs. The Albany base remains under EPA and Navy oversight, with long-term soil and groundwater monitoring and cleanup efforts in place.
If you served at any of these facilities, or others with a history of contamination, you may be eligible for disability benefits related to toxic exposure, even if the VA initially denied you. Let us review your case, identify issues, and build the evidence needed to win it.
