Are you a veteran who can’t work due to your service-connected conditions?

If so, you might be entitled to Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) benefits.

It’s crucial to know how long the TDIU claim process might take.

Here’s a quick look at what to expect from the timeline.

The TDIU Timeline and Process

Typically, the TDIU claims process mirrors the timeline of other VA disability benefit claims, but let’s cut to the chase: How long will it take?

Generally, veterans can anticipate the TDIU process to unfold over several months to even longer, depending on the complexity of the claim and the speed of the processing.

Remember, TDIU monthly pay is equal to a 100% disability rating.

And if you’re facing a denial, the appeals process is in line with other VA appeals, keeping your case moving forward.

Steps in the TDIU Claims Process

The VA follows five steps to handle your TDIU claim:

  1. VA receives the claim: Your journey starts when your application hits the VA’s desk.
  2. VA reviews the claim: They’ll check if all the needed info is there.
  3. VA gathers and reviews evidence: This is the fact-finding stage, where your service and medical records come under scrutiny.
  4. VA makes a decision and prepares the notification: The decision on your claim is made at this point.
  5. VA sends the decision: You’ll receive a letter detailing the outcome of your claim.

TDIU Timeline for Appeals

If your claim doesn’t go through, you have one year to appeal to maintain your original claim date.

The appeal process can vary, but it’s similar to other VA disability benefits claims, with the time taken differing based on the appeals lane you choose.

Expediting a TDIU Claim

Sometimes the claim process can be sped up.

Veterans might qualify for an expedited process if they’re of advanced age, have a terminal illness, or face severe financial hardship.

Plus, there’s a pilot program called Claim Accuracy Requests (CAR) for faster appeals, with a 30-day filing window for eligible cases.

Getting your evidence and documents in order right away is key to a swift process.

  • They got my disability rating after I was denied twice. They knew exactly how to format and submit the claim. I was rated 50%, Hill & Ponton weren’t done, they found other medical that related to exposure and submitted additional claims. I could not have received a disability rating without Hill & Ponton.
