MacDill Air Force Base opened in 1939 as Southeast Air Base. It was then renamed in 1941. The Air Defense Command operated the base starting in 1954, after the air force constructed a mobile radar station on site. The Tactical Air Command was then the main tenant for 30 years, starting in 1962. Currently, the 6th Air Refueling Wing is the main unit on the base. The base’s primary missions include refueling and pilot training.
