Base Background

The United States Navy has had a presence in Narragansett Bay since the Revolutionary War. Until the late 19th century, sailors learned their trade on the job, but by the 1880s, the Navy introduced shore-based training for officers and enlisted personnel, selecting Narragansett Bay as a key site. By 1913, a Naval Hospital was established on the mainland of Aquidneck Island to support training and operations.
