Base Background

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown (NWSY) was established in 1918 on Virginia’s Peninsula to support mine-laying operations during WWI. At the time, it was the largest naval installation in the world. Today NWSY provides explosive storage, maintenance, research and development, and logistical support services. Navy and Marines personnel also train at this base.

Toxic Exposure at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown

Past and present activities at NWSY have resulted in contamination of soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment with metal contaminants, VOCs, CVOCs and other toxic substances. The base was added to the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1992 and remediation is still ongoing. There are currently 16 sites under active investigation.

PFAS Contamination

The Navy is currently investigating contamination with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), specifically perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
