Legal Services in San Antonio, Texas
- Disability Compensation: We fight to help veterans secure the maximum monthly tax-free payments for injuries, illnesses, or disabilities incurred or aggravated during active military service.
- Appeals: Was your VA disability claim denied? We specialize in handling all stages of the VA appeals process, from Higher-Level Reviews and Supplemental Claims to Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA) hearings. We know how to identify errors, gather necessary evidence, and build a strong case to overturn a denial.
- Increased Ratings: If a service-connected condition has worsened since your initial rating, you may be entitled to a higher disability rating and increased monthly compensation. We can help you file for an increase and provide the medical evidence needed to support your claim.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): We provide compassionate assistance to surviving spouses, children, or parents of service members or veterans whose death resulted from a service-related condition.
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC): For veterans with severe disabilities requiring assistance with daily living (Aid and Attendance) or those who have suffered specific types of injuries (e.g., loss of limb, blindness), we help pursue SMC, which provides compensation above the standard 100% rate.
- Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU): If your service-connected disabilities prevent you from securing and maintaining substantially gainful employment, even if your combined rating is less than 100%, we can help you apply for TDIU benefits, which pays at the 100% rate.
VA Ratings and Compensation
Your veteran disability benefits are directly tied to your VA disability rating. The VA rates disabilities in 10% increments from 0% to 100% that measure the severity of your condition.
The higher your rating, the more compensation you can receive. To calculate your disability rating, the VA considers supporting evidence, the results of your C&P exam and other information.
Monthly compensation by disability rating for a San Antonio veteran with no dependents:
- 10%: $175.51
- 20%: $346.95
- 30%: $537.42
- 40%: $774.16
- 50%: $1,102.04
- 60%: $1,395.93
- 70%: $1,759.19
- 80%: $2,044.89
- 90%: $2,297.96
- 100%: $3,831.30
Compensation is determined by marital status and the number of dependent parents or children. Use our VA disability calculator to estimate your monthly benefits.
In addition to this compensation, disabled veterans also qualify for federal and Texas state disabled veteran benefits. Our lawyers can help you obtain everything you’re entitled to receive.

Winning Claims & Appeals
The VA denies disability claims for a variety of reasons, including missed deadlines, incorrect forms, incomplete information or the failure to show up for a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination. In many cases, claims are denied because there is no clear nexus — proof that links your military service to your disability.
Filing an appeal can be complicated, which is why many veterans choose to work with VA disability lawyers. Your legal team will help you choose an appeal path and navigate the process. The appeal will involve:
- Legal arguments. Explain why the original claim decision was incorrect.
- Supporting evidence. Provide proof that connects your disability to your military service. This may include a strong nexus letter, medical records, exam records, witness statements and other relevant documentation.
- Correct forms. Each appeal path requires specific forms, which must be completed correctly and submitted before the deadline.
- In-person meetings. You or your lawyers may meet with a VA representative or attend hearings.
When Is a VA Disability Lawyer Necessary?
For many veterans, the best time to hire a lawyer is after an initial claim was denied or underrated. Appeals can take months or even years; a lawyer can stay current on changes in the VA process, help you avoid mistakes and get compensation faster.
At Hill & Ponton, VA-accredited attorneys use their detailed knowledge of VA law to choose the best legal strategy, gather evidence, write legal arguments and present your case effectively before VA reviewers and judges.

Proving Toxic Exposure Claims
Contact with toxic substances, often through contaminated water or burn pits, can result in a wide array of disabilities affecting San Antonio veterans. Those who served at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), Martindale Army Airfield or other military bases should be particularly aware of these potential local exposures:
- PFAS Contamination: Joint Base San Antonio, which includes Lackland AFB, Fort Sam Houston and Randolph AFB, has documented contamination with PFAS chemicals, linked to cancer and other health issues. This contamination primarily stems from the historical use of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) during firefighting training and emergencies. Kelly Air Force Base (now part of JBSA-Lackland’s Port San Antonio) is recognized as an EPA Superfund site due to significant contamination.
- Asbestos Exposure: Like many older military installations, buildings on Lackland AFB and Randolph AFB were constructed using materials containing asbestos. This includes insulation, floor tiles, roofing materials, and pipe wrap found in barracks, administrative buildings, hangars, and hospitals. Asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis years later.
- PCBs, VOCs and Heavy Metals: Environmental investigations at JBSA have identified other potential hazards, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), heavy metals like chromium and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Additionally, many San Antonio veterans were stationed or served tours elsewhere, potentially encountering hazards like burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan, jet fuel and jet exhaust fumes at air force bases or contaminated water at various military facilities. Our attorneys successfully handle claims related to these and other toxic exposures as well.

Local Housing Benefits for Veterans
Thanks to the expansion of VA benefits and the work of local organizations, San Antonio veterans are finding safe housing.
- San Antonio PIT Count 2024 report found 18% decrease in unsheltered veterans from 2023 to 2024.
- Annual Longitudinal Systems Analysis: 42% decrease in veterans experiencing chronic homelessness.
However, San Antonio veterans are still affected by rising housing costs due to recent population growth and urban expansion. This trend is particularly challenging for elderly and disabled veterans who may struggle to maintain their homes. Some veterans face food insecurity and financial instability during the transition to civilian life, making it difficult to access benefits.
